Whenever the temperatures begin to drop, and the leaves begin to change, the Halloween season is coming. This is the spookiest time of year, a time when people wear costumes and decorate their yards with creepy things. There is no one who more embodies this season than the legendary poet Edgar Allan Poe. At Bonjongles, we have a large collection of Poe’s works, as well as a great many other horror and mystery books. We wanted to take some time today to talk about why Poe’s legacy has continued to endure until today.
The Life of Poe
Born January 19, 1809, Edgar Allan Poe did not live a long life, dying only 40 years later. During his time on Earth, he made a permanent mark on the world of literature, putting some of the scariest stories ever conceived to paper. He lived in many places throughout his life including Boston, New York City, Richmond, and Baltimore. His remains are interred near those of his brother and grandparents in the Westminster Burying Ground in Baltimore.
His Many Classic Works
Poe wrote a great many short stories in his life, many of them classics beloved to this day. Some of his more famous short stories include “The Tell Tale Heart,” “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”. You can find these and other tremendous works by Poe in a variety of collections of his short stories.
In addition to writing short stories, Poe is also remembered for his poetry, and the dark imagery it evokes. Poems like “Annabel Lee,” “Lenore,” “The Bells,” and “The Raven”. The poem, “The Raven” was so popular it became the namesake of Baltimore’s new football team, being voted on by the citizens of Baltimore in a naming contest when the city finally got a team to replace the Colts.
Why is Poe So Beloved?
There are a great many authors who have left their marks on the world, and Edgar Allan Poe can certainly count himself among the greatest of all time. He had a unique style and prose that captured a particular darkness in a way unlike nearly any other writer. It can be hard to pinpoint exactly why a writer captures our imaginations, but Poe has for sure captured the imaginations of many, and will do so for many more years to come.
